Seminarie: Grid Forming vs Grid Following: How Do We Build Power Grids with Renewables and Converters?

10th October 2025 - 9AM - 2PM

ENGIE Tower, Brussels North

Is grid forming just a technical concept—or could it be the key to preventing future blackouts like the one in Spain?

In a rapidly electrifying energy system, where decentralised renewables and converter-based assets are becoming the norm, traditional “grid-following” is no longer enough. Tomorrow’s grid must be stable, secure, and smart—starting with grid-forming technologies that actively shape the system.

Join KBVE-SRBE for a half-day of expert insights, real-world project cases, and strategic discussion on how we prepare our grids for the widespread deployment of renewables, converters and grid-forming.

What to expect?

A high-level programme featuring contributions from leading voices in the field:

  • Jef Beerten (Etch/KU Leuven/EnergyVille) – Grid-forming converters for HVDC systems: research and outlook
  • Francesco Giacomo Puricelli (Etch/KU Leuven/EnergyVille) – A clear introduction to Grid Forming Control
  • Marco Zaccaria (ENTSO-E) – How grid forming is shaping new European grid codes
  • Tony Hearne (EU DSO Entity / ESB Networks) – DSO perspectives on grid forming integration
  • Dimitri Nesterov (Engie Impact) – Lessons from international projects and blackout scenarios
  • Mohammad Moradzadeh (Elia) – Inside Elia’s Grid-Forming Moonshot: from control loops to system design

Expect live Q&As, expert panels, strategic insights, and a networking lunch to close the day.
